ADOPTION OF BIOENGINEERED CROPS AgEcon
Fernandez-Cornejo, Jorge; McBride, William D..
Use of crop biotechnology products, such as genetically engineered (GE) crops with input traits for pest management, has risen dramatically since commercial approval in the mid-1990s. This report addresses several of the economic dimensions regarding farmer adoption of bioengineered crops, including herbicidetolerant and insect-resistant varieties. In particular, the report examines: (1) the extent of adoption of bioengineered crops, their diffusion path, and expected adoption rates over the next few years; (2) factors affecting the adoption of bioengineered crops; and (3) farm-level impacts of the adoption of bioengineered crops. Data used in the analysis are mostly from USDA surveys.

An Economic Evaluation of Conservation Farming Practices for the Central West of NSW AgEcon
Farrell, Terence C..
Economic benefits that arise from conservation farming practices need to be assessed over several years to account for improvements in soil structure and nutrient levels. A gross margin model was used to assess benefits over the eight-year period 1999-2006 for 12 regions in the central west of NSW. The annual benefits from improved soil structure ranged from $2.46 to $12.82 per hectare (ha). A reduction in tractor power produced annual savings in the range of $0.60 to $4.05 per ha. The cost of soil compaction by livestock grazing on crop areas ranged from $3.41 to $14.90 per ha. The break-even time to pay back costs for the conversion of machinery for no-till seeding was two to three seasons.

Comparison of fall and spring bedding for furrow irrigated potatoes following fall moldboard or chisel plowing NWISRL
Shock, C.; Stieber, T.; Eldredge, E.; Sojka, R.; Kennedy-Ketcheson, E..
The decision to fall or spring bed potatoes is often dictated by weather and processor contract agreements. Although there are advantages to both fall an( spring bedding, soil conditions are often wet in the spring in Malheur County, Oregon. Spring bedding of wet soils leads to soil compaction and decreased water infiltration. The primary objective of the study was to determine the effects of fall or spring bedding on tuber yields and quality under furrow irrigation. Determining the most effective method of fall potato ground preparation was the second objective of the trial. Land for potato production is normally moldboard plowed in the fall. Chisel plowing may provide better placement of residues in bedded ground and thus promote higher...
